Inner Child Work
Who Did I Have to Be?
Many of us learned to become a certain kind of person in order to feel safe, accepted, loved, or easier for others to handle. This tool is here to help you gently notice the role you may have taken on, why it formed, what it cost you, and where it may still be shaping your life now.
Step 1 of 7
Step 1
Think about who you learned to be growing up in order to stay connected, avoid conflict, receive approval, or feel emotionally safe.
Step 2
Every role usually had a purpose. It helped you survive something, avoid something, or keep some form of connection.
Gently reflect:
- What did this role help me avoid?
- Did it protect me from conflict, criticism, rejection, disappointment, or being seen as too much?
- How did this role help me feel safer or more accepted?
Step 3
Beneath every role is often a fear, something that felt too risky if you did not keep being that version of yourself.
Gently reflect:
- What was I afraid would happen if I didn’t act this way?
- What felt unsafe about being more honest, emotional, messy, or fully myself?
- What did I believe might happen if I stopped performing this role?
Step 4
The role may have protected you, but it may also have come with a cost.
Gently reflect:
- What did it cost me to keep being this version of myself?
- What needs, feelings, or truths got pushed aside?
- How has this role shaped the way I relate to myself now?
Step 5
When we adapt to survive, some parts of us often get hidden, silenced, or left behind.
Gently reflect:
- What parts of me felt unsafe to show?
- What emotions, needs, or qualities did I have to hide?
- What part of me didn’t get to come with me?
Step 6
Now gently bring this into the present. Notice where this old role may still be showing up in your life today.
Gently reflect:
- Where do I still feel like I have to be this version of me?
- In what relationships or situations do I slip back into this role?
- What would it feel like to loosen my grip on it, even a little?
